John Earnest Cokas, formerly of Swampscott, was born in Lynn, Massachusetts on April 8, 1934, and passed away peacefully at the VA Hospice in North Hills, California on January 11, 2015 at 11:55 a.m. He grew up in Lynn and attended Lynn public schools. John served during the Korean War, was honorably discharged from the U.S. Air Force and received the National Defense Service Medal. He was a licensed hairdresser and owned a fast food restaurant in MA. John was certified by Boston University Division of Continuing Education for Food Service Management and worked in the restaurant industry as bartender, waiter, head waiter, and captain. He enjoyed fine dining, swimming, the beach, car shows, cats, travel, spending time with his grandchildren, and going to the movies.
John was predeceased by his wife Sonya-Marie (Guimond) Cokas, his parents Costos and Garafalia (Fassioutis) Cokas, his brother Stanley Cokas, his sister Sia Zavoritis, brother-in-law George Zavoritis, and nephew James Zavoritis. He is survived by his sister Theodora Cokas, a nephew Steve Zavoritis, his son Michael Cokas and wife Diana Goodwin along with grandchildren Sam and Rachael, his son Nicholas Cokas, and grandchildren Jack (John) Cokas and Mariana Cokas.
There will be a future memorial service and burial at the Swampscott Cemetery for friends and family to be announced.
